Tulpenrallye 1989

The story of 1989: The route had to be altered this year, because the municipality of Soest refused permission for a test to be run on the part of the Vlasakkers that lies within the municipality of Soest. The troubles of recent years, when spectators had got onto the terrain anyway to watch the test, had gone down badly with the mayor, who had come to see the place for himself the year before. The AMAC contested the decision all the way to the Supreme Court, but was not upheld. A much smaller test was still run on the metalled part of the Vlasakkers that lies within the municipality of Amersfoort. There were 17 special tests in all. The tests at Barneveld were now run several times over, and this led to some delay during the morning. In the afternoon programme several of the morning's tests were combined with one another into longer ones. The test over the tank tracks at Stroe could not go ahead, because they were in too poor a condition. John Bosch brought his BMW M3 to the start once again, whilst the young Erwin Doctor led the Ford team. Henk Vossen (Lancia Delta Integrale), navigated by André Schoonenwolf, Jan van der Marel (Mercedes 2.3 16 V), Paul Maaskant (in a hired Opel Manta 400) and Peter van Merksteijn (Opel Kadett 2.0 GSi) completed the top of the Dutch entry. The major foreign names at the start were Bror Danielsson (Sweden) together with Pierre Krieger in a Mazda 323 4WD, Jörgen Hansen (Denmark), Juha Miettinen (Finland) and Thomas Jansson (Sweden). John Bosch went on the attack straight away and Erwin Doctor lost several tens of seconds on the opening tests. He was tense, and his Ford was rather less suited to the Barneveld tests. Bosch then had some minor trouble with the ignition when the Drieënhuizen test was run for the second time. On the third running of Drieënhuizen, Bosch's navigator Ruud Oosterbaan clocked in late, which earned them five penalty seconds. Doctor began to believe in his chances once more. He was clearly more at ease when the tests were run for the second time and won time back on John Bosch. Before the final test, the Harselaar industrial estate with more than 35,000 spectators, the difference between Bosch and Doctor was minute. Bosch started first, immediately followed by Doctor. At the finish it turned out that Doctor had been three seconds quicker than Bosch. That left the total time of the two crews over all the tests together exactly equal. With Bosch and Oosterbaan's five penalty seconds added in, Erwin Doctor and Theo Badenberg became the winners of this edition of the Tulpenrallye. Various rumours went round that the turbo boost of the engine in the Ford Sierra Cosworth had been wound up further and further as the afternoon went on, and that on the Harselaar the car had had well over 400 bhp. It will probably never be proved. The prize-giving was again held on the Sunday at Hoevelaken. Irma Nijenhuis and Cindy Roos won the Coupe des Dames in Jan van der Marel's Mercedes.
