Tulpenrallye 2011

The story of 2011: Partly at the request of route setters Adrie Brugmans and Jaap Daamen, an entirely new rally area was used for this edition, the last one they would set out. After many years of starting in the mountains in the south-east, the start of this edition was planned in the west of the country: in Monestier, not too far from Bordeaux. A magnificent château with its own golf course was chosen for the start (Chateau des Vigiers), and it was there that all the crews gathered on the Sunday. The hotel provided a large marquee so that the cocktail party could be held on the Sunday, and on the Monday all the crews set off from the drive. From there the route ran through central France, with Montauban and Rodez as the stage towns for the first days. The routes through these new areas were superb. On the Wednesday the caravan reached Vichy, after which the route ran on to Troyes on the Thursday. Here, too, the Tulpenrallye had never been before. The town had no large hotel where all the competitors could dine, but the mayor made the town's Salle des Fêtes available for the purpose. Friday brought another new location as well: Dinant in the Belgian Ardennes. The Saturday route ran through Brabant and over the Tulpenrallye Sprint on the boulevard in Noordwijk to the finish. This edition had a number of new partners supporting the event. Vredestein remained involved and Ricoh, as a new partner, took on the printing work among other things. Gant had been supplying the Tulpenrallye polo shirts for years, but now also provided jumpers for all competitors and thereby became a partner of the event. Novabox, of entrepreneur Alexander Mans, became the fourth partner. The Tulpenrallye once again supported the KiKa foundation. Frank Versteegh and Wouter Karssen drove the celebrity car and presented a cheque for 15,000 euros at the finish. The leading competitors in this edition were Paul Wignall / Mark Appleton (the winners of the previous edition), Jayne Wignall (Paul's wife) with Peter Rushforth, Daan Reekers / Jaap Verplanken, Cees de Jong / Valentijn de Jong, Cor Lokker / Wilko Vaandrager, Albert Boekel / Joep Wanders, Rinus Sinke / Bart den Hartog, Harm Lamberigts / Peter Rovers and Jan Ebus / Jan Berkhof. Jan Ebus and Jan Berkhof won this thrilling 58th edition of the Tulpenrallye. They had been taking part for a good many years, almost always finished near the top and had already won the Coupe Rallye des Tulipes back in 2002. The big red Mercedes of Ebus / Berkhof only just fitted into the car lift of the Grand Hotel “Huis ter Duin” and that evening made a majestic entrance into the Pickézaal with both winners on the bonnet. Harm Lamberigts and Peter Rovers took a fine second place, only 48 points behind, and Rinus Sinke / Bart den Hartog occupied third place. The Sporting class was won by Paul Zweers and Arjan van der Palen, whilst Willem Kamps and Ellen Witten claimed first place in the Touring class. Michiel Hehenkamp and Ron Nakken again won the Vintage class in the Bentley. At the festive prize-giving, route setters Adrie Brugmans and Jaap Daamen were thanked most warmly for the eight magnificent editions of the Tulpenrallye they had set out. They were invited to take part again in the next edition.
