Tulpenrallye 1987

The story of 1987: The A.M.A.C. successfully continued its proven formula. Once again there was a particularly strong field at the start, and just under 100,000 spectators visited the event. The weather was poor and wet. The organisers again tried to obtain permission to open the Vlasakkers to the public, but this met with objections from the municipality of Soest. After a number of accidents in international rallying, the fast cars built specifically for the sport, such as the Ford RS200 and the MG Metro 6R4, were no longer allowed. Competing cars were now permitted a maximum of 300 bhp, and Group B cars were to be banned in due course. The field therefore looked rather different, and Group N for standard cars was introduced. John Bosch was the favourite in this field, this time navigated by the Briton Guy Hodgson. The Dutch front-runners were once again Guy Colsoul (Belgium) and Paul Maaskant of the Dutch Opel dealer team, and Jan van der Marel and Peter van Merksteijn with the new Ford Sierra Cosworth entered by main sponsor Ford Nederland. Henk Vossen started with an Audi. The leading foreign entries included the Swede Gunnar Pettersson (Audi), Ralv Ingar Schau from Norway with a Ford and the quick Dane Jörgen Hansen. The Danes Steen Andersen and Jörgen Nielsen were both entered with a works Opel Kadett GTE. The Swedish pairing of Jerry Ahlin and Susanne Kottulinsky started with an Alfa Romeo, and the ever spectacular Bo Sandin came to the start with a VW Golf. Herwig Nelissen took part with a Group B Nissan, navigated by Lambert Peeters. The route was broadly comparable with that of previous years. Eighteen special tests were included in the rally this year (216 km). The organisers took extra measures to cope with the great public interest. The Vlasakkers were guarded more strictly still, with officers on motorcycles and with dogs, and from the air by helicopter. At Barneveld the railway police were deployed to keep the public off the line that runs alongside a number of the tests (and that had led to delayed trains in the past). A spectacular section through a sand quarry was added to the test at Garderen. The finale was once again on the Harselaar. Public interest there was rather lower than in previous years, because an enormous downpour broke just before the start. Bosch and Hodgson left little doubt that they were the strongest crew in this rally and took the lead straight away. On one of the laps at the Vlasakkers they picked up a puncture and had to drive ten km with it. That cost them time and their lead came down to a minute. On the following tests they put matters right again and headed straight for victory. Colsoul could not live with that pace. He treated the crowd to his highly spectacular sideways style and drove to second place. Pettersson had trouble with his car early in the morning and lay 19th. In the course of the rally he fought his way back to third place at the finish. Paul Maaskant had to stop on the sixth special test to sort out problems with his tyres, and dropped a long way back. During the day he made up much of that deficit and came home fifth at the finish in Barneveld. Jan van der Marel put an end to the bad luck of recent years (he had not reached the finish of the Tulpenrallye since 1981). He brought the new Ford Sierra Cosworth, entered by Ford Nederland, to fourth place. Peter van Merksteijn was eighth in an identical car and so kept his lead in the interim standings of the Dutch championship. Bo Sandin duly provided the spectacle. He rolled once at the Vlasakkers, and on the last 10 metres of the rally — the forest track on which the finish of special test Harselaar lay — he hit a tree hard and the Golf caught fire. Bosch and Hodgson were deserving winners, but realised that the Audi was too quick under the new regulations and that this left little of a contest. They were already building up a fast VW Golf GTI for the rallies still to come that year. Erwin Doctor and Pierre Krieger were the winners of the national class with a Ford Sierra. The prize-giving was held on the Sunday in Amersfoort.
