Tulpenrallye 1995

The story of 1995: Naturally, the organisers built on the success of the previous year. In 1994 they had still wanted to use only one hotel along the way, because they could not properly judge what the transfers and the booking of hotels in different towns would entail. As all of that had gone smoothly in 1994, it was decided this year to make the route longer and to stay overnight in several places along the way. It was also decided to return to the region where so many Tulpenrallyes had been run: the French Vosges. The rally therefore became a day longer as well, with the start now brought forward to the Wednesday; the finish remained planned for the Saturday. Noordwijk of course served once again as start and finish town, whilst the rally was again run under FIVA regulations. Part of the road book was taken directly from one of the editions of the 1960s. Entry was open to cars built before 1972, and there was once again a sports class (113 competitors) and a touring class (70 competitors). Important foreign entries were Nicky Porter and Andrew Bodman (Mercedes 220 SE), winners of the Monte Carlo Challenge in 1994, and Ron Gammons–Jane Bourne (MG-B), winners at Monte Carlo in 1995, the Danes Andersen and Friborg (Tulpenrallye winners in 1994), Mike Cornwell (Porsche 356), the Frenchman Diacono (Austin Healey) and the Belgians Willy Potjans (BMW) and Roger Munda (Porsche 911). The Dutch contingent included Maus Gatsonides and André Jetten, this time with a replica of the Ford Zephyr in which Gatso had won the Monte Carlo rally in 1953, Renger Guliker, together with his daughter Ingeborg, in a Fiat 1600S, and Eddy van den Hoorn – René Smeets with the Volvo 1225. The oldest cars were the Lagonda 2L (1929) of Macko Laqueur and the Alvis Tourer (1939) of Bob Meijer. After scrutineering in Noordwijk on the Tuesday and a reception afterwards by the town's mayor, at which the founding of the Historic Rally Team Holland was also announced, the competitors drove 500 km on the Wednesday from Noordwijk to Arlon (familiar from the rally's history and, in the difficult 1970s, several times its turning point). On the Thursday the crews reached the Vosges, where lunch was taken in Turckheim. There followed a demanding leg through the Vosges, which took in famous sections from earlier rallies and on which the competitors crossed both the Petite Ballon and the Grande Ballon d’Alsace. Prolonged snowfall in the final weeks before the rally meant that this section had to be altered. The route through the Vosges was felt by the competitors to be the hardest part of the rally. By the time they returned to Turckheim it was already dark. On the Friday the route ran to Germany, with a special stage over part of the Nürburgring before the finish in Adenau. Via Arnhem, Druten and Beneden-Leeuwen the convoy drove back on the Saturday to the finish in Noordwijk. Van den Hoorn made it clear on the first day that he was going for victory, leading the classification with only 52 points. On the second day Andersen and Friborg moved up the classification from eighteenth to second place, whilst on the third day Willy Potjans and Piet van Dieten climbed from eighth to second. The fourth day was fairly straightforward and gave virtually no one any further trouble. Only Antoon aan de Stegge still dropped out of the top twenty, when he blew up his engine. Loek de Rooij and Peter Bezemer took a 1950 VW Beetle to the finish. The car was still original — the split-window model, with an old linen registration document — and went up the mountains at 40 km/h. Its top speed was 110 km/h! The prize-giving again took place in the great hall of the Grand Hotel ‘Huis ter Duin’ over an extensive dinner, during which, as the main prizes were being presented, Eddy van den Hoorn's winning Volvo was driven into the room. Maries Dinaux and Eric van Straaten (Triumph TR6) won the touring class, followed by Van de Klashorst and Levert (Triumph TR 3B). Titia Westerhof and Anja van der Marel won the Coupe des Dames.
