Tulpenrallye 1996

The story of 1996: On the strength of the previous year's success, another day was again added to the programme. The start now took place as early as the Tuesday, so that almost two days could be spent driving in the Vosges. The sports class had 146 entries, whilst the remaining 49 competitors were entered in the touring class. Setting off under number 1 this year were Maus Gatsonides and Bob Dickhout, with the replica of the 1953 Ford Zephyr. For Gatso this was his 10th Tulip, whilst Dickhout was starting for the 13th time. Between them they were 155 years old and brought more than 100 years of rally experience to the start. The brothers Martien and Paul van Doorne, grandsons of the founders of Daf, brought to the start a Daf 55 Marathon that had taken part in the London-Sydney Marathon in the past. Other Dutch entries were Eddy van den Hoorn and René Smeets, Bart and Timo Rietbergen, Renger and Ingeborg Guliker, Constantius Steger and Jean van der Elst, and the ladies Titia Westerhof and Anja van der Marel. Dries Jetten — this was his 13th start in the Tulpenrallye — took the start this year in the sports class together with his son Piet. Jan Berkhof was on the start line once again too. After earlier appearances in the nineteen-seventies with Jan van der Marel, and having laid out the rally a number of times in the early eighties, he was this time the navigator for Linus Verhoeks. Foreign contenders were the Belgians Arnold van Dolder and Jan van der Meer, Mike Cornwell (Porsche 356-1964), Andersen-Friborg and the Britons Philip Prettejohn and Malcolm McKay (Jaguar E-type-1965). After the start in Noordwijk the route headed for Belgium by way of Bergen op Zoom, whose tourist office was a sponsor this year. In Belgium it was always difficult to find the route on the Michelin maps that formed the basis of the Tulpenrallye in these years, but in the end most crews arrived at La Roche in the Ardennes. On the second day the route led through Belgium, Luxembourg and the north of France to Türckheim in the Vosges. For the Thursday a long loop through the Vosges had been laid out, taking in the Ballons section and the new route of the 1000 lakes. On the Friday the competitors drove from Türckheim to Monschau, from where on the Saturday they set off towards the finish in Noordwijk. Munda and Roriffe (Porsche 911-1965) gave clear proof of their experience in historic rallying. They took in all 53 time controls and 83 route controls without a single penalty point. Only on the regularity stages did they pick up 90 penalty points. Van den Hoorn and Smeets (Volvo 122 S-1965) also visited every control correctly, but they lost the rally on the regularity tests. At the 20 secret time controls included in them they collected 112 penalty points more than the Belgian winners. Don van der Vaart and André Jetten were in contention at the front for a long time, but dropped back with technical trouble. The same befell Gatsonides and Dickhout when they ran into problems with the fuel pump on the Friday. Sadly, for the first time there were also two accidents with serious injuries to report. Both crews ended up in hospital in France, but returned home in good health a few weeks after the rally. The touring class was won by television presenter Rob Fruithof together with Autovisie journalist Ron Herlaar in an Alfa Romeo from Team Rallysport Amersfoort. Titia Westerhof and Anja van der Marel won the Coupe des Dames once again. At the prize-giving Maus Gatsonides confirmed that this had been his last appearance in competition. He and his wife, winner of the Coupe des Dames in 1949, were given a standing ovation by the 600 people present.
