Tulpenrallye 2000

The story of 2000: Although the special 1999 edition had gone off successfully, the organisers nevertheless decided to return to France in 2000. The choice was made not only to take in the Vosges but also to go back to the challenging mountains of the Jura! Once again the rally covered almost a full week, and it started on Monday 8 May at ten in the morning. On the first day the field already reached Bouillon, on the border between Belgium and France. The hotel in Bouillon was not sufficiently prepared for the large group of competitors from the Netherlands. As the evening wore on, the hotel ran out of beer. The wholesaler was telephoned and delivered a number of fresh barrels that same evening, so the problem was solved. On Tuesday the finish was at Besançon. From Besançon, Wednesday brought a long loop through the French Jura, with Confort, level with Genève, as the southernmost point, the competitors returning to the same hotel in the evening. Thursday took in the Vosges, with lunch at the top of the Ballon d’Alsace and the finish at la Petite Pierre. Friday brought a demanding leg through the Belgian Ardennes, finishing at Priorij Corsendonck near Turnhout. Saturday held one more surprise: the Tulpenrallye returned to the Vlasakkers for the first time since 1989. A secret test had been laid out there for the sporting class. Only at the entrance to the grounds did the competitors receive the navigation instructions for this test. From the Netherlands the most prominent competitors were Bert Dolk – Jan Berkhof, Adrie Brugmans – Jaap Daamen, Man Bergsteijn – André Jetten, and father and son Leunis and Richard de Kam. The leading foreign competitors were the likeable Belgians Gilbert Wilssens – Filip de Munck and the Germans Frans Zapfe – Anja Bögershausen. Bert Dolk and Jan Berkhof took the lead on the first day and held on to it through to Thursday, although the crews in the places behind them were only a limited number of penalty points adrift. On Friday, Adrie Brugmans and Jaap Daamen struck in the Ardennes, missing just 1 control whilst every other crew picked up a multiple of that in penalty points. The secret test at the Vlasakkers naturally added a good deal of extra tension, but both Dolk and Brugmans managed to limit the damage there to 56 penalty points. Adrie Brugmans and Jaap Daamen, with an Alfa Romeo, won the 47th Tulpenrallye.
