Tulpenrallye 2001

The story of 2001: After the 2000 event Kees Stoel stepped down as clerk of the course, though he remained chairman of the organising committee. Abe van den Brink took over from him as clerk of the course. André Jetten, meanwhile, went on helping Hans Brinkman to lay out the rally. The extensive scrutineering of the competing cars was held on the boulevard at Noordwijk. Not only on the Sunday, but early on the Monday morning as well, before the start of the rally. At 2650 km this was the longest Tulpenrallye the AMAC had organised so far. The start on the morning of Monday 14 May came early, and so the caravan was already at Verdun in the north of France that evening. Tuesday took the crews to Malbuisson, where the rally pitched its tents for two days in the wonderfully classic hotels on the shore of the lake of the same name. Wednesday brought an interesting loop through the Vosges and the Jura, with lunch 100 km south of Genève (at Bellegarde, the southernmost point of the route), followed on the Thursday by a run through the Vosges to St. Avold. Friday then led by way of Luxembourg to the Philips Autolampen factory — one of that year’s sponsors — at Aachen in Germany. That evening the organisers discovered that a large number of road books for the following day had not been correctly delivered by the printer. The books were produced again overnight. On the Saturday route a secret test was waiting for the competitors: this time laid out on the DAF Trucks test track in Brabant. Among the leading favourites that year were Dolk-Rorife, Ebus-Berkhof, Wilssens–De Munck, Zapfe-Bögershausen, Westerman-Roosenboom, van Baaren-Dentzler, Guliker-’t Hart and father and son Huisman. The German Frans Zapfe led after the first day with zero penalty points. Over the days that followed a thoroughly absorbing contest developed, in which Bert Dolk and Robert Rorife took over the lead on the Tuesday. They fought a tense battle over the four days that followed and, on the Friday afternoon in the Ardennes, extended their lead over the other crews decisively. The experienced Rorife’s knowledge of the terrain in Belgium undoubtedly played an important part in that. At the prize-giving Dolk drove the winning Volvo into the Pické hall of “Huis ter Duin” and thanked his navigator Robert Rorife on the podium. For both competitors it was the second time they had put their name to the Tulpenrallye. Dolk won the special 1973 event to Poland together with Bob de Jong, and the Belgian Rorife won one of the first historic editions in 1996. All the competitors agreed that this had been the finest Tulpenrallye of recent years.
