Tulpenrallye 2002

The story of 2002: In 2002 things were eased off a little, as it was not yet entirely clear how many days of rallying the competitors preferred. The start was scheduled for the Tuesday, after the scrutineering of the participating cars on the boulevard in Noordwijk and the reception hosted by the municipality of Noordwijk on the Monday. The route had once again been laid out by Hans Brinkman and André Jetten. After the start in Noordwijk the competitors headed for Luxembourg for the first overnight halt. The route ran via the familiar rally locations of Chaam in Brabant and Eijsden in Limburg, and took in rather less of Belgium so that the competitors reached France sooner. There the route had to be altered on the second day, when it became clear that the route of the Giro d’Italia followed some of the same roads. Riquewihr in the French Vosges had again been included in the route, and here the competitors covered the final metres of the second day through the historic centre of this picturesque town. Dinner that evening was held above the town gate in Riquewihr. The third day ran entirely through the Vosges, with all the well-known Tulpenrallye passes included in the route. The fourth day consisted of a fairly simple morning section, but the “Ardennes offensive” in the afternoon was highly demanding. Saturday brought a difficult section in the morning, and partly because of the heavy local traffic over the Whitsun weekend many competitors lost time here. An unexpected “points and arrows, free route” section in the Netherlands added a few further challenges, and on the way to Noordwijk the competitors stopped in Utrecht at sponsor Fortis Bank for lunch. The most notable competitors were Eddy van den Hoorn, Bert Dolk, Renger Guliker, Jan Ebus, Karel Westerman, Frans Zapfe (D), Peter Pratt (GB), Barry Weir (GB) and Rolf Lie (N). After the first day the two rivals of the 2001 edition, Dolk-Rorife and Ebus-Berkhof, were once again at the head of the field. On the second day, however, Ebus lost time, and so Dolk-Rorife were back in the lead at the end of that day. On the Thursday Dolk retired when he found himself behind a herd of cows and the clutch of his Volvo burnt out. Other crews picked up penalty points that day as well, and so Westerman and Roosenboom led at the end of day 3. On day four they held on to the lead, whilst Ebus-Berkhof reached the finish at Wavre with a broken gearbox. It seemed they would be unable to continue. After a great many telephone calls Jan Ebus eventually found another gearbox, in Germany, 600 km away. It was brought to Belgium and fitted into the Mercedes overnight. When the other crews then made mistakes on the Saturday, and van den Hoorn-Smeets booked in at the wrong time somewhere, Ebus and Berkhof won the 49th edition in the red Mercedes.
