Tulpenrallye 2009

The story of 2009: The start in Annecy had gone down well in the previous edition, and in 2009 the Tulpenrallye returned to Annecy for the start of the 56th edition. The Impérial Palace Hotel on the shores of the lake was once again the starting venue, and it was there that the 189 crews taking part gathered on the Sunday afternoon for the traditional cocktail party. The Ardèche had been explored in detail by route planners Brugmans and Daamen during the previous editions, and in order to run a fine route there the Monday night was spent in Vals-les-Bains. The Alps were visited rather less that year, and the Jura not at all, with the rally staying more towards the centre of France. Characterful Vichy was taken in for the first time by the historic Tulpenrallye, and from there the route ran on day three to Beaune. On the fourth day the Vosges were on the programme once more, and after years of searching for a suitable location in the Nancy / Metz region, the organisers finally found one in Pont-a-Mousson, roughly halfway between the two cities. The Abbaye de Premontre (a large monastery) offered every opportunity for a dinner full of atmosphere. The town had rather little hotel space, but in the end all the competitors found accommodation in the wider region. The route planners wanted to stay outside the Netherlands for as long as possible, and it was therefore decided to spend the Friday night in Genk (Résidence Stiemerheide). On the Saturday the final leg was run to Noordwijk. The mood in the rally caravan was as good as it gets. Once again the roads consisted largely of mountain sections, and the weather grew better by the day. Rinus Sinke and Bart den Hartog stayed at the head of the Expert class. They were well aware that the Tulip had never been won by an Austin Healey, and that weighed heavily on their shoulders. The battle in the Expert class remained extremely close. Yet Rinus Sinke, in his 15th Tulpenrallye, won the 56th edition of the event, adding the beautiful English sports car built by Donald Healey to the event's roll of honour for the first time. Several thousand spectators were on hand for the finish on the Saturday afternoon. The closing dinner at Grand Hotel 'Huis ter Duin' had a tremendous atmosphere and the 700 guests enjoyed themselves thoroughly. At around eleven in the evening, to the strains of 'Simply the Best', Sinke and Den Hartog drove the winning Austin Healey into the Pické Room of Grand Hotel 'Huis ter Duin' and were given a standing ovation.
