Tulpenrallye 2008

The story of 2008: This year the Tulpenrallye started in Annecy. It was beside Lake Annecy that the idea for the Tulpenrallye was first discussed, back in 1948. 60 years later the event returned there for the start of its 55th edition. The magnificent Impérial Palace was chosen as headquarters, and it was here that the cocktail party for all competitors and officials was held on the Sunday afternoon. 184 crews came to the start. To make the Expert class a little more exciting still, and to draw a clearer distinction between the Expert and the Sport class, an evening stage was added to the Expert class route. It was run largely in the dark and was scheduled this year for the Wednesday. Halfway through the rally, and running through the wine country around Riquewihr in the Vosges, with a great many small roads that were not easy to find, the Expert competitors enjoyed a fine evening, whilst the other crews were treated to the hospitality of Riquewihr. The evening stage included a good number of gravel roads and a ford through a river. This year the organisers decided to support a good cause. In April the Stichting Kinderen Kankervrij KiKa christened its new tulip, in the presence of a large number of Tulpenrallye cars and competitors. RTL presenters Rick Nieman and Roderick Veelo took part in the rally on KiKa's behalf in a magnificent Porsche 911 from Pon Porsche Import. At the prize-giving they handed KiKa chairman Frits Hirschstein a cheque for 10,000 euros, a sum the competitors doubled during the evening by means of a raffle. The Tulpenrallye also recognised that sustainability was becoming an ever more important theme, and entered into a partnership with the newly founded Stichting Oud voor Behoud. Together with them and Staatsbosbeheer, the Tulpenrallye wood was planted at the end of the year, so as to make a tangible contribution towards offsetting the CO2 emitted during the rally. The wood was financed by the Tulpenrallye organisation and by a large number of competitors who supported the initiative. In the weeks before the rally a great deal of snow fell in the Alps, which left route planners Brugmans and Daamen with a good deal of work in checking the routes all over again. In the end the problems proved less serious than feared, and only the route over the highest mountain, the Col de la Croix on the way to the ski area of Les Diablerets, had to be altered. For the first two days the route ran over the highest mountains in the Alps. There was still snow along the roadside everywhere, and the two tests laid out on those days in ski resort car parks also ran over tracks with some snow still lying on them. After an earlier brief visit to Switzerland, the organisers this year took up the challenge of running rather more of the route in Switzerland. From the Portes-Du-Soleil ski area, where lunch was taken on the Tuesday, the route went on to Lyss, the Tuesday night halt, and the caravan did not return to France until the Wednesday afternoon. By way of both Ballons d'Alsace the crews reached Riquewihr on the Wednesday evening. On the Thursday the route once again led to a country new to the Tulpenrallye: Germany. The finish was in Bad Kreuznach, where the competitors were welcomed by a large number of spectators in the Kurpark. On the Friday the crews drove to Kasteel Vaeshartelt, by way of a test at the Nürbürgring among other things. On the Saturday the route ran through the Netherlands, with a number of demanding map-reading sections in Brabant and a test on the kart circuit at Eindhoven. The crew of Rutger Reinders and Erwin Berkhof won the 55th International Historic Tulpenrallye in convincing fashion. The young crew took the lead in the Expert class on the second leg and then extended it further all the way to the finish on the Saturday at the Grand Hotel "Huis ter Duin" in Noordwijk, never giving it up again. The battle in the Sport class was exceptionally close throughout the week in which the rally was run, and was settled in the end in favour of the crew of Janhein de Rooij and Fred Hak in a 1965 Porsche 356. The Touring class was won by father and daughter Pim and Stéphanie Brunet de Rochebrune in a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL. This year the rally was run in exceptionally fine weather on every day and over a great many mountainous sections. With 19 retirements, this was a decidedly tough edition of the Tulpenrallye!
