Tulpenrallye 1997

The story of 1997: No extra day was added to the programme this year, although the start on Tuesday morning came very early indeed. Germany was avoided as far as possible, because of the difficulties in obtaining the necessary permit in that country. The fashion manufacturer State of Art appeared this year as the event's new main sponsor. Among the competitors was Bert Dolk, winner of the rally in 1973. Other Dutch contenders were Eddy van den Hoorn (Volvo 1225), Renger Guliker (Fiat 1600S), Don van der Vaart (Triumph TR3A), Linus Verhoeks (Austin Healey 3000 MKII), Eric Leerdam (Ford Lotus Cortina), Dries Jetten (Ferrari 250 GTE) and Titia Westerhof (Volvo 121). Notable foreign competitors were Martin Petit, Mike Cornwell, Piet van Dieten and Neil Wilson. The Belgian Rudi Theissen started in a Ford Escort Mexico, the car in which Roger Clark had won the rally in 1968 (at that time still in experimental form). The Swiss competitor Christian Heussi started in a 1933 Citroën TA II Cabriolet, navigated by the enthusiastic Henk van Montfort, who was setting out on his twelfth Tulpenrallye. After the start in Noordwijk the competitors headed towards Eindhoven, where lunch was taken at the DAF museum. The afternoon route produced the traditional trouble with the maps in Belgium, so that once again a number of competitors reached La Roche very late indeed for the night's rest. The next day the route ran through Belgium and northern France, with lunch in Charleville, to the northern Vosges. Dinner that evening was in Türckheim, and the following day brought the by now traditional run through the Vosges. After lunch in La Bresse the route turned north again to La Petite Pierre, which had been included in the Tulpenrallye several times in the past. On Friday the route ran by way of Mandern, Luxembourg and Belgium to Vaals. On Saturday the crews drove through Vaals, Lent and Veenendaal to the finish in Noordwijk. After the first day, on which only 25 crews stayed free of penalty points, Frans Zapfe and Anja Bögershausen (Mercedes 220 SE Coupe) led rather unexpectedly. Van den Hoorn and Smeets were still 15th at that stage. In the second part of the second day many crews picked up penalty points, and by the end of that day Van den Hoorn was in the lead, followed by Guliker and Van der Vaart. On the third day Guliker produced a unique performance by completing one of the regularity tests in exactly the right time, which left him leading at the end of the day, with Van den Hoorn only 10 seconds behind. On the morning of the fourth day Van den Hoorn missed a control, which cost him 300 penalty points, and the way was open for Guliker to settle the event in his favour. By then, however, his clutch had failed, so he could not turn round when he went the wrong way, and he too missed a control. Guliker missed another control in the afternoon, and the same thing happened to him again on Saturday, so that in the end he had to settle for sixth place at the finish. Van den Hoorn and Smeets won the Tulpenrallye once more, having missed only one of the 153 controls. They were followed in the result by Van der Vaart, Verhoeks, Westerman and Cornwell, who were separated by no more than 70 seconds. The touring class was won by father and son Dolf and Eric Beuk from Noordwijk. The team prize went to Historic Rally Team Nederland. At the prize-giving and the closing party at Huis ter Duin, Johnny Kalvin brought the house down and had every competitor swinging on the dance floor.
