Tulpenrallye 2005

The story of 2005: The successful formula of starting the Tulpenrallye abroad was continued. Route setters Adrie Brugmans and Jaap Daamen had come across St. Nectaire during their summer holiday and recognised it as a suitable starting place. The village lay in the middle of a magnificent rally region. The facilities were somewhat limited, but the 169 competitors who came to the start were made most welcome at Sunday's cocktail party in the Mercure hotel. On Monday morning at around half past seven there was ice on the roofs and windows of some of the cars. It was minus one degree. It promised to be a glorious day. Saint-Nectaire lay at an altitude of 950 metres, and after only 4 kilometres the first roads were already climbing. A little further on, the route passed the cave dwellings of Jonas. Obtaining the permits to run the Tulpenrallye on the public roads of France was a time-consuming process for the organisation, and it was becoming ever more demanding. In order to show the authorities that the organisation dealt seriously with the conditions imposed by government, a speed check with a laser gun was held out on the route for the first time. This proved to work well. A few offenders were penalised and all the other competitors had been warned. The routes on the opening days led through the Auvergne and the Ardêche, and the competitors were impressed by the magnificent roads. New regions also brought new stage towns. The nights were spent in Vals-les-Bains, Vichy, Avallon and Compiègne. At Avallon the police held an unannounced speed check that evening. Every competitor kept properly to the limit. On Friday the crews stayed in Gent in Belgium, and the final day's route ran once again through Zeeland to the finish at Noordwijk. On the way to the finish, an unexpected regularity test with an unusual set of regulations was run on the island of Tholen. At the finish on the car park of the Grand Hotel “Huis ter Duin” there was more public interest than ever before. Under a brilliant sun, and in a force 5 wind, the competitors were received with Moët & Chandon champagne, La Tulipe wine, tulips, and herring with Corenwyn — all of it given a convivial musical setting by a performance from the “Big Band Bollenstreek”. Bert Dolk and Erwin Berkhof, in their 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, put their names to this Tulpenrallye just as they had in 2004. In a keenly fought contest over six days between 8 and 14 May and more than 2300 kilometres, they outwitted the opposition. Although their lead fell away markedly on the final day, they were the strongest over the event as a whole. For driver Bert Dolk this was a fourth victory in a Tulpenrallye, equalling the record set by John Bosch in the 1980s. For navigator Erwin Berkhof it was a second win in the Tulpenrallye. The touring class was won by Sijbrand and Taco van der Mast, also in an Alfa Romeo (a Giulietta of 1959).
