Tulpenrallye 2006

The story of 2006: That the Tulpenrallye should start abroad was no longer a matter for discussion. This year Villefranche-sur-Saône was chosen as the starting location, on the Route du Soleil and therefore easy to reach from the Netherlands by motorway. Once again a number of competitors sadly failed to make the start, retiring on the way there. 152 crews reported in at the start hotel. The organisers recognised that sponsorship was becoming ever more important, and for the first time laid on a dinner with the event's sponsors at the start location. Alongside the regular sponsors, the main sponsors, or Partners, were given a little more attention still. For this edition those were the IT services provider Atos Origin and F. van Lanschot Bankiers. As a Partner of the Tulpenrallye, Atos Origin had developed a new system for recording the competitors' passage along the route electronically, and for calculating and publishing the standings during the rally. For this the competitors were issued with control cards containing a chip. At the controls along the route the time of passage was stored on them electronically. At the end of the day these were read into the computer, after which the classification was quickly drawn up. The system made its debut in an international rally on the Tulpenrallye, and it was promising. The first day's route ran from Villefranche-sur-Saône through the Massif Central to St. Flour. At 440 km this was immediately the longest day. The weather gave the competitors a good deal of trouble. It had rained hard all night, there was a fair amount of fog on the first regularity test, and later in the day the crews drove through an enormous hailstorm with hailstones the size of small stones. On the second day the route ran through the ski area on the Col de Peyrol (1,400 metres), but it had to be diverted that morning because a great deal of snow had fallen during the night. As a result a large number of competitors reached the lunch venue very early, but the staff there managed to keep it all running smoothly. That evening the competitors arrived in Limoges, and from there on the Wednesday they drove further west in France, to Blois. Dinner that evening was taken in the magnificent castle in the middle of the town. On the Thursday the route went along the western side of Paris — something that had not often happened on the Tulpenrallye — to Beauvais. On the Friday the crews headed north, and by way of a lunch halt and a regularity test on the fast circuit of Croix-en-Ternois they reached the evening's finish in the Belgian city of Ghent. The final day's route was laid out largely in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, and included a regularity stage run under a special set of regulations. Among the leading contenders were Eddy van den Hoorn / René Smeets, Bert Dolk / Erwin Berkhof, Ruud Strooper / Ingeborg Guliker, Jos Lommerse / Marleen Hendrikse, Harm Lamberigts / Arthur Denzler and Bart ter Borg / Rutger ter Borg. Over the course of the week a particularly close contest developed, with the opening days of the rally the most demanding of all. Eddy van den Hoorn / Renée Smeets had to retire with a broken dynamo mounting. Dolk and Berkhof built steadily on their leading position through the week, and by the Friday evening they looked reasonably certain of victory. That changed on the Saturday, when they came to a standstill in Zeeland with no idea at all what was wrong with the Alfa. Happily, after 13 minutes the organisers' service crew arrived and got the car running again. Bert Dolk and Erwin Berkhof thus took the 53rd Tulpenrallye. In doing so they achieved something unique, winning the rally three times in a row. Bert Dolk was now the only competitor to have won the Tulpenrallye five times. He had won a modern edition back in 1973, and later another classic edition together with the Belgian Robert Rorife. All week Dolk and Berkhof had been engaged in a close battle with the crews of Jos Lommerse / Marleen Hendrikse and Ruud Strooper / Ingeborg Guliker, who eventually finished second and third. Throughout the week in which the rally was run, the gap between these three crews was never much greater than 100 penalty seconds. Ans Berkelaar / Huib Berkelaar were the winners of the touring class.
