Tulpenrallye 2007

The story of 2007: Mâcon was the starting town this year. Once again along the Route du Soleil and a little further south. In the heart of the Bourgogne region. The cocktail party on Sunday afternoon was hosted by the winegrowers of Mâcon together. With 189 crews on the start line it was clear that the international concept of the Tulpenrallye was catching on and was becoming ever more popular with the competitors. In the week before the Tulpenrallye, chairman Kees Stoel was made a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. This year the organisers introduced the Expert class. Classic rallying was developing all the time and a number of navigators were becoming better and better. That made it ever harder for the route planners to devise a route challenging enough for all the navigators who wanted to compete at sport class level. The organisers solved this by introducing a new class alongside the sport class: Expert. Here the navigational challenges were the greatest and the time allowed for the sections shorter than in the Sport class. From now on the overall winner of the Tulpenrallye (Coupe Rallye des Tulipes) would be the winner of the Expert class. Tests on closed venues were also added to the event. Route planners Adrie Brugmans and Jaap Daamen suggested this on the strength of the success of these tests in other historic rallies. They added something extra to the challenge facing a crew, and so to the classification, and they also gave the driver a chance to show his or her qualities. 5 of these tests were included in the programme this year. After the successful introduction of the partner concept, the Tulpenrallye had 4 Partners this year. Van Lanschot Bankiers was a partner once again and the IT services provider LogicaCMG had taken the place of Atos Origin. Vredestein tyres and DTZ Zadelhoff were the new Partners. Vredestein thereby renewed its historic relationship with the Tulpenrallye and would remain active as a Partner of the Tulpenrallye for many years. On the first day the route went straight into the mountains and offered plenty of challenges from the outset. A number of high mountains were taken in; the finish that day was at Aix-les-Bains. Day 2 ran to Yverdon-les-Bains in Switzerland on Lake Neuchâtel and took the competitors over the Grand Colombier (with a time control in thick fog), the highest point of this edition of the Tulpenrallye. On Wednesday the start was in front of the handsome castle of Neuchâtel, for a route over the mountains of the Jura and the Vosges, lunch at the Peugeot museum in Sochaux and the finish in the well-known Riquewihr. On Thursday the competitors carried on northwards by way of a test at Circuit Geoparc, arriving at the end of the day at the Alvisse Parc Hotel in Luxembourg. Friday brought bad weather and an exceptionally strong wind. Several trees came down across the roads of the route, but they were cleared in time by the route planners and the course cars running ahead of the rally convoy. From Kasteel Vaeshartelt, where Friday night was spent, the competitors drove towards Noordwijk on Saturday. A number of demanding sections had been laid out in Brabant, including a challenging test on the DAF test track at Udenhout. The leading competitors included Bert Dolk / Erwin Berkhof (winners of the previous three editions), Jos Lommerse / Marleen Hendrikse, Harm Lamberigts / Arthur Denzler, Karel Westerman / Martin Roosenboom, Lisa Lankes / Robert Rorife, Albert Boekel / Joep Wanders, Jan Ebus / Jan Berkhof and Ruud Strooper / Ingeborg Guliker. Jos Lommerse and Marleen Hendrikse laid the foundations for victory on the first day by being the only crew to miss no more than 1 control. Dolk / Berkhof caused surprise by missing 5 controls. They could not explain it themselves either, but the fact that they had not been able to drive together much before this Tulpenrallye will not have helped. The crew of Jos Lommerse and Marleen Hendrikse won the 54th edition of the International Historic Tulpenrallye convincingly in their Alfa Romeo Giulia 1300 from 1964. Having already taken third place in 2005 and finished second in 2006, on the evening of Saturday 12 May this crew were able to drive their car into the Pickézaal of the Grand Hotel 'Huis ter Duin' to receive the Coupe Rallye des Tulipes. Second place in this Tulpenrallye went to the crew of Ruud Strooper / Ingeborg Guliker with an Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV from 1968 (872 points), whilst Karel Westerman and Marten Roosenboom with a Porsche 356B from 1963 (1162 points) came into Noordwijk in third place. The sport class was won by Peter Dutman and André v.d. Geijn with an Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV from 1968, followed only 84 points behind by Michel Perridon and Maurits Verhoeff with a Volvo 121 from 1965. The touring class was won convincingly by the young, debuting crew of Jochem Kentgens / Kasper Pruysen with a Morgan 4/4 Competition from 1971 (2357 points), after a keen battle with Pim and Stéphanie Brunet de Rochebrune with a Jaguar E-Type DHC from 1966, 194 points behind. Outside Noordwijk, Kentgens / Pruysen were met by 25 classic Morgans that escorted them to the finish.
